Geeky Confessions

Recently one of my favorite blogs, Gamerwife, wrote a post about her geeky confessions and invited everyone else to join in! We all have some, and I have plenty. I could go on about this for days, but today I'm limiting it to only a few, and I tried to make them pretty diverse in their types of geekiness. With that said...

Doctor Who

I don't get the Doctor Who hype. I REALLY tried to like Doctor Who. Everyone else (or so it feels like) is watching it, and I like being able to discuss shows with people. I watched two seasons (the ninth and tenth doctor), but I just couldn't get into it. I only reason I made it through two seasons was because my friends told me the next one was better...and it was, a little bit. Not enough for me to stick around, though. I normally like BBC shows, too!

Harry Potter

I didn't finish all the Harry Potter books. This one I actually feel kind of bad about :( I read the first four as they were released, and then just sort of...stopped. I was still pretty young when they were coming out, so I'm wondering if I couldn't get into the later books as they darker? I don't know. I do plan the read them all eventually, but I'm not in a big hurry.

Halo

I think Halo is boring (along with Call of Duty and Battlefield). As much as I love games, Halo is kind of the worst. It's only a personal opinion, obviously, but I find them all repetitive and lacking depth. They also give me a headache, but I don't judge them on that part because I'm just a special snowflake. I get very irrationally judgmental when someone says, "I love playing video games!" and when I ask them what they play, they can only list Halo (or Call of Duty, or Battlefield). I'm kind of a jerk about it, but for the most part I can keep my thoughts to myself, hahah. Last year when I interviewed at Gamestop, the manager asked me if I liked first person shooter games, because "Guys always come in wanting them, and they like it when girls like them too." So I lied and said I liked them. I know, I know - but I really wanted the job, ok? (I got the job, if you're wondering, unfortunately it wasn't as great as I'd hoped.)

Superman overpowered

I think Superman is overpowered, making him uninteresting. Or, you could flip it around and say that his enemies are lame and underpowered. His weaknesses are also hard to exploit. Either way, I respect Superman for being the OG hero and paving the way for all the amazing comics we have today; he just isn't very interesting to me.

What are your geeky confessions? I won't judge!

  1. I agree with you on Doctor Who and Superman! I really disliked Matt Smith as the Doctor and lost interest because the stories absolutely made no sense and were filled with plot holes. And yeah, prefer superheroes with flaws and weaknesses!

    1. I think Matt Smith is really handsome, but I find all the personalities of each Doctor (that I've seen) so annoying! Totally kills it hahah. Aaaaagh.

    1. I've seen all the movies, too! Hahah. I love them all, but I'm sure the later movies are missing a lot from the books.

  4. I think NuWho is utter garbage. The old ones have a sort of campy sci-fi charm to them, if you like that sort of thing, but the series reboot is just full of whiz-bang explosions and needless sexual tension and other pandering nonsense. If you are at all a fan of midcentury science fiction I would give the old Who a go; you might find it more appealing. "An Unearthly Child" is the first story arc and is kind of eh. I think "The Daleks" and "The Sensorites" are the most fun early on---the scifi story arcs are generally more interesting (to me) than the historical ones.

I feel you on all the rest, though. For reals. I hate that "video games" these days automatically translates to "first person shooter CALLERDUTY!!!!!!11!" And those same dudebros turn into whiney crybabies when they try their hand at something legitimately challenging, like Demon's Souls. Newbs, all of them.

    1. Maybe I will try the older ones. Honestly I'm kind not really into time travel as a whole (though I loved the Time Warp Trio books as a kid!). I wanted to give it a shot anyway since people love it so much, hahah.

Did you finish Demon's Souls? I had to rage-quit that one, it was driving me crazy! I can be pretty newbish but at least I'm aware of it :P Even so I still appreciate it because like you said, it's actually interesting and challenging unlike all these stupid shooter games coming out. That's another thing - why do they keep making more? They're all the same, just (sometimes) in a different setting. It's lazy!

    2. I haven't yet! I think I'm afraid that there's going to come a point where it WILL get ~too hard~ and I won't be having fun anymore. Like, I've had so much fun playing it that I don't want to play it anymore and somehow ruin the experience? Or something? Even though I've made more progress than apparently 60% or so of most gamers, if you judge by my trophies.

Also my gaming time has been occupied with Fallout 3, Ni no Kuni, and now Diablo 3.

  7. Shaking my head in disappointment. You MUST finish the last Harry Potter books. The movies are great, but the books are just so much more! I'm currently in the middle of rereading the whole series.

  10. Nice list! I'm pretty even on Doctor Who. I've enjoyed some episodes but never an entire season. And I'm not too impressed by what I've seen with the new Doctor.

    1. Yeah, I've seen a couple individual episodes that I liked well enough - but as a whole they don't drive me to keep going hahah

  11. I totally agree about Superman, even though I actually don't know much about him, but from what I've seen I think he's just too perfect to be interesting. I haven't read all the Harry Potter books either, just the first five, and I like you I just stopped. I intend to read them but I keep procrastinating haha

  12. I have watched Doctor Who and it took a while for me to like it. The doctor after a couple of episode won me over. Although it is not a show I watch faithfully, I will watch it with others.

Do you have a favorite superhero?

    1. My favorite superhero is Aquaman!! Hahah. So maybe my opinion on superheros is not one to trust. I think my second favorite is Thor, though :) Who's yours?

  14. I'm so with you on Doctor Who. My college roommates loved it, and now a lot of my eighth grade students love it, but I just don't get it - it seems so cheesy and low-budget.

  15. I haven't read all the Harry Potter books either. I didn't like reading when they came out and I just haven't had the time to read them!

  16. I never could get into Harry Potter. I feel weird admitting it because people will probably hate me haha But I only read the first book and watched the first 3 movies and after that I was done.

  18. I am totally disagree with you. Doctor Who with each actor is amazing! In fact I wrote a post about my love for Doctor Who. Girl! Call of Duty, Halo are the best (well, I love looking people playing it). Now I'm reading Harry Potter books, you should read them, seriously they are very good.

And about superman, I haven't seen it or read it.

  20. I'm with you on Doctor Who and CoD, although I don't mind when my husband plays because that means more blogging time! I feel like I'm more of a nerd in other ways than the "normal" nerd ways, if that makes sense

  21. Cool confessions! I love Doctor Who but for a long time I didn't get it, and can still even understand what is up with the hype. :)

  22. I agree with you on Superman, I never found him that interesting. I think Batman is a much better superhero, much more "real."
